71% of Singaporean employers now prioritize AI skills over experience

A recent survey from AWS revealed that 71% of employers in Singapore now value AI skills over experience, reshaping the job landscape for professionals and entrepreneurs alike.

In fact, nearly 90% of business leaders surveyed expect to fully integrate AI into their operations by 2028, with many already leveraging generative AI to innovate and streamline.

This means that businesses are actively seeking talent with AI expertise—not just within tech, but across fields like sales, marketing, finance, and operations. For forward-looking entrepreneurs, this also means that the time is nigh to jump on the AI bandwagon.

With AI talent in high demand, businesses appear to be ready to reward those who can wield this skill effectively. In the AWS report, some IT workers with AI expertise have seen their pay jump by as much as 47%. Leaders across departments now understand that AI can amplify productivity, create personalized customer experiences, and drive efficiency.

The need for AI proficiency is becoming as essential as basic digital literacy once was. Two-thirds of employers now consider it a non-negotiable skill, and Microsoft’s 2024 Work Trend Index highlights a major shift: 66% of business leaders wouldn’t hire a candidate who lacks AI skills, and 71% would choose an AI-competent newcomer over an experienced candidate who doesn’t have these skills.

Another survey from Microsoft in 2024 indicates that 77% of employers believe AI-savvy talent will receive greater responsibilities and a faster trajectory within their organizations.

Therefore, developing a team that’s empowered by AI can enable entrepreneurs to take on more innovative projects, build deeper client relationships, and create a more purpose-driven business.
