Afeela self-driving car coming: Sony and Honda look to AI to power EV

Sony Group and Honda Motor are set to introduce AI-powered autonomous driving features in their joint electric vehicle (EV) venture, Afeela.

First revealed as a four-door sedan equipped with high-end gaming-inspired technology in January 2023, the Afeela EVs will hit the Japan and US markets by 2026.

Nikkei Asia reports that AI will play a key role in advancing the car’s self-driving capabilities, starting with Level 3 autonomy, which allows for autonomous driving under specific conditions, such as on highways, while still requiring human intervention in complex scenarios.

The AI system will be updated regularly—possibly once or twice a year—allowing for continuous improvements in driving capabilities.

By integrating AI, Honda and Sony aim to make the technology more adaptive, reducing the need for expensive sensors while improving the vehicle’s functionality over time.

Industry leaders like Tesla and BYD are also using AI to enhance autonomous driving technology. Tesla integrated AI into its systems last year and recently introduced its upcoming Robotaxi and Robovan, while BYD is expected to launch a similar system by the end of 2024 in collaboration with Huawei.
