Known for seamlessly mixing English with Malay, Mandarin, and dialect-specific slang, Singlish has posed a complex challenge for AI voice assistants. Now, the Speech Lab’s AI model has made impressive strides, enabling more natural and precise interactions across various healthcare and emergency services.

Deployed at SingHealth Polyclinics, the Singlish-enabled AI tool supports medical staff by transcribing patient interactions in real time. The model works offline for added privacy, operating entirely on local systems, ensuring sensitive information stays secure. 

Its multi-language transcription capabilities have been rigorously tested, including deployment trials with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), where it assists 995 emergency responders in quickly transcribing calls and prompting follow-up questions.

Local place names, like Choa Chu Kang and Tampines, have often eluded mainstream AI’s speech-to-text capabilities, but Speech Lab’s model bridges this gap, achieving up to 90% transcription accuracy.

While the advancements are promising, Singlish’s unpredictable mix of dialects and accents remains a hurdle for many AI models. Medical AI researcher He Kai points out that any misinterpretation during emergency calls could lead to wasted resources or delay in treatment, highlighting the need for highly accurate systems. Past security breaches in speech-to-text tech have added caution, reminding developers of the importance of robust data security measures.

Adoption challenges in Singapore also reflect a global AI trend: building tools that are both technically sound and culturally attuned. Beyond just interpreting language, AI models need to foster trust and familiarity with users, a goal that the Speech Lab’s local language integration seeks to address.
