Apple is reportedly preparing a transformative upgrade for Siri, aiming to position the digital assistant as a strong competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Live.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new version, dubbed “LLM Siri,” will leverage Apple’s advanced AI models to enable more conversational and natural-sounding interactions.
This AI-powered overhaul is part of Apple’s broader strategy to integrate AI (“Apple Intelligence” as they would call it) deeply into its ecosystem. The updated Siri will reportedly handle more complex tasks, such as summarizing and composing text, and will have enhanced capabilities to interact with third-party apps using App Intents.
While Apple may announce the plans as early as 2025, the full rollout is expected in spring 2026, with Siri’s underlying software set for a complete replacement. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software, hinted at the assistant’s unique positioning during an interview with The Wall Street Journal:
“The properties of something like OpenAI’s advanced voice mode and Siri are quite different. That OpenAI mode is great if you want to ask a question about quantum mechanics or have it write a poem. It’s not going to open your garage or help you send a text. Siri does many useful things locally on your device, quickly and securely. Will these worlds converge? Of course, that’s where this is heading.”
Apple has been cautious in its AI rollout compared to competitors, introducing a ChatGPT integration in Siri only recently as part of the iOS 18.2 beta. Upcoming features will include Siri’s ability to understand on-screen content and execute actions within apps, slated for release next year.
