Bangkok’s new AI-driven data center to boost Thailand’s digital ambitions

Thailand is set to welcome a new data center in Bangkok designed specifically for AI applications.

This development comes as domestic and international firms drive demand for high-performance digital infrastructure. The project, a joint venture between Thailand’s PROEN Corp and Dubai-based EDGNEX Data Centers by DAMAC, will be located on Rama IX-Srinagarindra Road.

With a planned total capacity of 20 MW, the first phase—a 5MW carrier-neutral facility—will be operational by February 2025. Subsequent phases, meeting Tier III standards, will roll out next year, offering 99.982% uptime and system-wide backup power.

“AI applications require three to four times more power and space than traditional data centers,” explained PROEN CEO Kittipan Sri-bua-iam. “An AI server consumes 10–20 KW of electricity, far exceeding the 3.5–10KW usage of general servers. This makes energy efficiency and access to green power essential for future investments.”

Thai policies like the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which facilitates affordable green energy for industrial use, have been instrumental in attracting foreign investment.

“Green energy at 2.5–3 baht per unit is a game-changer for industrial operations,” said Kittipan.

Despite the advancements, Kittipan highlighted a critical hurdle: a shortage of skilled AI professionals. Thai educational institutions remain focused on teaching basic AI usage rather than fostering expertise in system management and infrastructure development.

“With the right support, students can build on foundational AI knowledge to master advanced applications,” Kittipan emphasized.
