Disney assembles new group to drive responsible AI and XR innovation

Disney has announced the establishment of a strategic group tasked with coordinating the company’s use of AI and extended reality technologies across its diverse divisions.

Spearheaded by Jamie Voris, who has been Disney Studios’ chief technology officer for over a decade, the newly formed Disney Office of Technology Enablement (OTE) will focus on ensuring that next-generation tech adoption aligns with Disney’s values and objectives, Reuters reported.

Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chair, revealed in a memo that the initiative was launched to keep Disney at the forefront of technological innovation while prioritizing responsibility.

“The pace and scope of the advances in AI and XR (extended reality) are profound and will continue to impact consumer experiences, creative endeavors and our businesses for years to come – making it critical that Disney explore the exciting opportunities and navigate the potential risks,” Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman wrote.

“The creation of this group underscores our dedication to doing that.”

The OTE will work closely with technology teams across Disney’s various businesses, such as Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and Disney’s theme parks, to ensure these advancements benefit both business operations and consumer experiences.

The OTE, however, is not intended to centralize or control existing AI and XR projects but rather to provide a guiding framework to accelerate the adoption of these technologies.

In tandem, Marvel Studios’ tech head Eddie Drake will take over as CTO of Disney Studios, allowing Voris to focus fully on the new office’s efforts.
