Google challenges ChatGPT with Gemini’s new memory feature

Google is stepping up its AI game with a new memory feature for Gemini, allowing the chatbot to retain user preferences and key details across conversations.

This new feature builds on Gemini’s context-awareness, enabling more personalized and efficient interactions – avoiding repetitive instructions for its users such as writers, students, and developers.

With the update, users can share preferences casually or through a dedicated “Saved Info” page, which provides full control over what Gemini remembers. Data can be reviewed, edited, or deleted at any time, aligning with privacy trends that prioritize user control while delivering smarter AI experiences.

“The goal is to reduce repetitive explanations and make interactions with Gemini more fluid,” Google explained in its announcement.

Currently available to Gemini Advanced users on the US$20/month Google One AI Premium Plan, this feature positions Google to compete directly with OpenAI’s similar “Memories” function in ChatGPT. Both tools let users customize their experience by saving details like food preferences or favorite topics, offering tailored responses in future conversations.

However, concerns linger about data privacy. While the “Saved Info” page offers transparency, questions remain about how much data Gemini records and whether it might be used for other purposes. For many, the idea of AI maintaining long-term memory feels intrusive, despite assurances of control.

This update arrives as Google aims to close the gap with ChatGPT, which still dominates the AI chatbot market with 54.96% share and 3.1 billion monthly visits. By contrast, Gemini ranks fourth with 4.75% market share and 267 million visits. But with deeper integration into Google Workspace and updates like memory, Gemini could narrow the divide.

As Gemini evolves, it’s clear Google is banking on personalization and enhanced usability to carve out a bigger slice of the rapidly growing AI assistant market.
