Google Cloud partners with Air France-KLM to take off data and AI strategy

Google Cloud has announced a strategic partnership with Air France-KLM (AFKL) to advance the airline group’s data-driven transformation and generative AI (gen AI) strategy.

The collaboration aims to enhance customer experiences, optimize operations, and drive innovation across AFKL’s extensive global network.

Air France-KLM, which encompasses three major airline companies operating 551 aircraft and serving 93 million passengers in 2023, generates vast amounts of data from its commercial and cargo flights, as well as its engineering and maintenance services. To unlock the potential of this data, the airline is transitioning its legacy data centers to a multicloud strategy, using Google Cloud’s tools like BigQuery for analytics and insights.

With these enhancements, AFKL seeks to deepen its understanding of passenger preferences, travel behaviors, and operational needs. The move is already yielding results, with predictive maintenance data processing times dropping from hours to minutes. This improvement boosts efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Gen AI will play a pivotal role in AFKL’s transformation. Early use cases include automated customer support documentation and streamlined aircraft maintenance processes. Through a dedicated and secure generative AI cloud instance provided by Google Cloud, AFKL will benefit from advanced multimodal capabilities, ultra-low latency, and a flexible multicloud framework.

This initiative includes building a unified data lakehouse that combines the airline’s data resources with Google Cloud’s expertise. “Our collaboration with Google Cloud is a significant step forward in our data strategy,” said Pierre-Olivier Bandet, EVP and Group CIO of Air France-KLM. “With generative AI, we aim to build the future of travel while ensuring security and innovation.”

Beyond technology, Google Cloud will support AFKL’s workforce through specialized training in data science, infrastructure, security, and gen AI. Hands-on hackathons and on-site training sessions will empower AFKL teams to democratize data use and improve decision-making capabilities.
