Google sets Gemini AI as top priority in high-stakes 2025

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has identified scaling the company's Gemini AI model as its primary focus for 2025.

That’s according to audio obtained by CNBC from a December 18 strategy meeting.

Pichai emphasized that the “stakes are high” in 2025, urging employees to recognize “the urgency of this moment” and the need for faster company-wide execution.

He acknowledged that Google needs to strengthen its competitive position in AI.

“With the Gemini app, there is strong momentum, particularly over the last few months,” Pichai said.

“But we have some work to do in 2025 to close the gap and establish a leadership position there as well.

“Scaling Gemini on the consumer side will be our biggest focus next year.”

The focus on Gemini’s consumer applications suggests Google is prioritizing making its AI technology more accessible to everyday users.

These statements reflect growing pressure on established tech companies to maintain relevance in the rapidly evolving AI sector, particularly as newer companies gain ground.
