ICYMI: How to build a billion dollar Bitcoin business on the GEN!USLIVE Podcast

Building a billion dollar Bitcoin business was the central topic of discussion in the inaugural episode of the GEN!USLive Podcast, which aired live on November 19, 2024.

Some things to look forward to, in case you missed it: the conversation dives deep into how businesses can leverage Bitcoin and blockchain to innovate and future-proof themselves. Hosted by Roger Hamilton, CEO of Genius Group, the episode features Genius Group board members and blockchain veterans Thomas Power and Ian Putter, who bring decades of experience to the table (plus, don’t miss the cameo from Genius Group Chief AI Officer Alan Turing).

The big idea

The episode centers on a bold proposition: businesses should seriously consider adopting Bitcoin as a treasury reserve. Roger explains that his company, Genius Group, has already begun building its Bitcoin reserves, inspired by companies like MicroStrategy and Japan-based Metaplanet. Both have seen transformative growth by embracing Bitcoin, with Metaplanet achieving a fivefold increase in market capitalization in just six months.

Thomas Power frames Bitcoin as a “Hobson’s choice” for companies. “The cost of holding cash is now so high that Bitcoin has become a no-brainer for treasury management,” he says.

Yet, he highlights the lack of understanding among executives: “Less than 10,000 people globally grasp the full implications of blockchain and Bitcoin for business. That’s a minuscule fraction of decision-makers.”

More than a hedge

Ian Putter expands on Bitcoin’s significance beyond a mere hedge against inflation. He discusses its potential as a foundational asset for decentralized systems and AI-driven economies. “In Africa, where trust in government currencies is low, Bitcoin adoption is already surging. People innovate out of necessity,” he notes.

Ian envisions a future where blockchain powers everything from supply chains to identity management, creating unprecedented transparency and efficiency.

One of the episode’s standout moments comes from Thomas’s reflection on boardrooms today, in which he observed that CEOs and CFOs need a clear path to reconfigure their organizations around tools like AI and blockchain. “But they’re stuck fighting for quarterly numbers,” he said.

Building the future: A 10-step Bitcoin strategy

The trio highlighted a practical framework for businesses considering Bitcoin integration. Some takeaways that those keen on getting started should take note of include:

  • Build a Bitcoin-first board: Genius Group appointed blockchain experts to guide its strategy.
  • Set clear targets: Aim for benchmarks, such as joining the “1,000 Bitcoin Club,” which signals a company’s commitment to innovation.
  • Choose the right jurisdiction: Operate where crypto policies are favorable—Singapore was Genius Group’s choice for its zero capital gains tax.

Ian emphasizes education as the foundation for any Bitcoin strategy. “This isn’t just theoretical knowledge—it’s about application. CEOs need to understand wallets, custody, and blockchain mechanics” to make informed decisions.

Looking ahead

An important takeaway for entrepreneurs looking to ride the blockchain wave is to act now. Roger describes the shift to blockchain and Bitcoin as “bigger than the dot-com boom” and likens investing in Bitcoin today to buying Manhattan real estate centuries ago. As Ian succinctly puts it, “The cost of not adopting Bitcoin could mean being left behind in a decentralized future.”

And finally, the experts urge leaders to seek knowledge and immerse themselves in forward-thinking communities. As Roger states, “The future isn’t about replacing humans with technology—it’s about using it to enhance what makes us human.”

This episode is packed with actionable insights and practical steps for companies looking to embrace blockchain and Bitcoin. Whether you’re a CEO, CFO, or simply curious about the future of business, this is a must-watch conversation.
