This initiative aims to advance sustainability in the beauty industry by reducing material waste and promoting eco-conscious product development.
The collaboration draws on L’Oréal’s expertise in cosmetic science alongside IBM’s generative AI technology. Together, the companies seek to streamline the innovation process, supporting L’Oréal’s ambition to transition to bio-sourced materials and circular economy practices for most of its product formulas by 2030.
“This partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, with products always reaching higher standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalisation,” said Stéphane Ortiz, L’Oréal’s Head of Innovation Métiers & Product Development.
The AI model will analyze data from formulations and ingredients to accelerate the development of new products, optimize reformulations, and improve production processes. It also aims to deepen understanding of renewable ingredients, enabling L’Oréal’s global team of 4,000 researchers to make data-driven decisions in creating sustainable beauty solutions.
IBM Consulting is working with L’Oréal to transform its formulation discovery process, focusing on solutions that fit with consumer demand for inclusivity and personalization. By integrating AI into its innovation pipeline, L’Oréal hopes to balance ecological responsibility with its commitment to cutting-edge beauty products.
This partnership represents a step toward redefining sustainability in the beauty sector, where advancements in AI and chemistry intersect to meet the challenges of modern consumer expectations and environmental stewardship.
