MicroStrategy’s 12-week Bitcoin buying streak ends as company halts share sales

MicroStrategy has paused its practice of selling company shares to purchase Bitcoin, ending a 12-week acquisition streak.

Executive Chairman Michael Saylor made the announcement on Tuesday 3 via X.

The firm holds 471,107 BTC — worth approximately US$100,000 per coin as of Feb. 4 — acquired for over US$30 billion. The pause follows MicroStrategy’s Jan. 27 disclosure of a US$1 billion Bitcoin purchase and marks its first week without share sales since November 2024.

MicroStrategy began accumulating Bitcoin in August 2020 with an initial US$250 million purchase and has since become the world’s largest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency.

Its buying pattern — often funded through stock sales — has influenced other firms to adopt similar treasury strategies. Healthcare company Semler Scientific, streaming platform Rumble, and miner MARA collectively added millions in Bitcoin reserves over the past two months, with MARA holding 44,394 BTC as of mid-December.

Government interest in Bitcoin reserves is also growing. US President Donald Trump signed a Jan. 23 executive order to study regulatory frameworks for a potential US Bitcoin reserve strategy. US states also appear to be contemplating their own Bitcoin reserves, with Utah looking to be the most advanced in this pursuit.

Corporate and government exploration of Bitcoin as a reserve asset continues despite short-term volatility linked to geopolitical shifts. MicroStrategy’s pause suggests a potential inflection point in institutional accumulation patterns, while tariff uncertainties keep Bitcoin’s price sensitivity to trade policy in focus. Sustained adoption by firms and nations could reinforce Bitcoin’s long-term role in diversified portfolios.
