The project, which began in 2016, has secured an expression of interest from Nigeria’s National University Commission (NUC). The institution will focus on teaching advanced AI technologies, including blockchain, cloud computing, generative AI, data science, and machine learning.
Wini Group — the organization behind the initiative — plans to create an academic environment modeled after similar institutions globally, including the first AI university established in Qatar. The university aims to attract faculty from China, India, the United States, and Europe.
The curriculum will emphasize hands-on training in emerging technologies, preparing students for roles in the global AI industry. Key focus areas include OpenAI systems, quantum computing, and practical applications of artificial intelligence.
“Our goal is to create a thriving community of academics and students who are passionate about advancing AI and quantum computing in Africa and beyond,” stated Wini Group representatives.
The university plans to establish a technology hub in Lagos that combines academic research with practical innovation. This development comes as artificial intelligence continues to influence global economic and technological advancement.
This initiative could expand Africa’s AI talent pool and create new opportunities for technological partnerships between Nigerian and international companies.
