Nigeria’s Chowdeck looking to munch into bigger slice of African food delivery market

Chowdeck, the Nigerian food delivery platform backed by Y Combinator, is exploring the possibility of expanding into South Africa, Kenya, and the Ivory Coast.

The company’s sales lead, Kennedy Offor, hinted at the move during the Moonshot event by TechCabal last week, citing the maturity of these markets, particularly South Africa, as a key attraction.

Chowdeck, founded by Femi Aluko, is already a major player in Nigeria, handling 40,000 daily deliveries, with 70% coming from Lagos State.

The company has diversified its app’s offerings, including grocery delivery, last-mile logistics, and an exclusive partnership with Chicken Republic. It has set sights on becoming the super app of Africa.

Expanding into competitive markets like South Africa, where companies like Mr D Food and Uber Eats dominate, or Kenya, home to Glovo and Bolt Food, will pose challenges.

However, Chowdeck’s strategy of helping restaurants grow by providing data insights and opening new outlets may help it find success in these regions.

With no concrete plans announced yet on the possible expansions, it remains to be seen whether or not Chowdeck can deliver on their vision.
