Nvidia unveils Hindi AI model as chipmaker expands partnerships in India

Nvidia looks set to tap deeper into the Indian market, notably by launching a new Hindi AI language model.

Reuters reported that the US chipmaker strengthened its ties with major Indian firms, including Reliance Industries, during an AI summit held in Mumbai today. The company also launched a new AI language model, Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, designed to cater to the widely spoken Hindi language and its dialects.

This lightweight model, built on four billion parameters, is said to offer a powerful yet cost-effective tool for Indian businesses aiming to develop custom AI solutions.

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, emphasized the company’s growing presence in India, announcing that its computing infrastructure in the country will expand nearly 20-fold by the end of 2024.

Major Indian firms like Tech Mahindra are already leveraging Nvidia’s technology to create the Hindi-centric Indus 2.0 AI model, showcasing the country’s focus on developing AI in native languages.

As India races to build its semiconductor industry, Nvidia continues to play a pivotal role in encouraging AI innovation. Partnerships with Indian IT giants such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Wipro are training over half a million developers on Nvidia’s AI platforms.

Furthermore, companies like Reliance and Ola Electric are adopting Nvidia’s Omniverse technology to simulate factory operations in virtual environments.

With less than 10% of India’s population of 1.4 billion fluent in English, Nvidia’s move to support Hindi and other local languages is seen as a major step toward expanding accessibility towards AI in the vast and diverse nation.
