OpenAI files trademark for o1, its first ‘reasoning’ AI model

OpenAI has submitted a trademark application for its o1 model to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The filing comes after a trademark application in Jamaica in May, months before the model’s public announcement. As reported by TechCrunch, The USPTO has not yet granted the trademark, with the application currently awaiting review by an examining attorney.

OpenAI describes o1 as its first “reasoning” model — designed to perform complex tasks by more thoroughly fact-checking itself during query processing. The company envisions o1 as the first in a series of advanced reasoning models.

This trademark application is part of OpenAI’s broader IP strategy. The company has filed approximately 30 trademark registrations, including for “ChatGPT,” “Sora,” and “GPT-4o.”

Notably, the company previously failed to trademark “GPT” after the USPTO deemed the term too generic.

The company has been selectively assertive about its trademarks. It recently secured a preliminary court injunction in a dispute with entrepreneur Guy Ravine over the “Open AI” name — a legal battle that began around the company’s founding in 2015.

The o1 trademark filing signals OpenAI’s continued focus on protecting its technological innovations and differentiating its AI model offerings in a competitive market.
