The company announced on Tuesday that Tasks will enable users to schedule actions, such as setting reminders for one-time events like concert ticket sales or automating recurring updates like daily weather reports or weekly news briefings.
The feature will also allow ChatGPT to suggest tasks based on user interactions, though users retain the ability to accept or decline these recommendations. This development places OpenAI in direct competition with other tech giants that are racing to integrate generative AI into their digital assistants.
The release of ChatGPT in late 2022 set off a wave of AI innovation, spurring companies like Amazon to revamp their offerings. Alexa, which has faced challenges despite its widespread adoption, is now being upgraded with generative AI capabilities. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy hinted last December that the enhanced Alexa, capable of proactive actions without explicit user prompts, is expected to roll out soon.
Similarly, Apple has bolstered Siri with its “Apple Intelligence” technology, blending OpenAI’s expertise into its assistant. As part of its collaboration with the Microsoft-backed startup, Apple ensures user consent before using ChatGPT for queries.
OpenAI plans to roll out the beta version of Tasks to Plus, Team, and Pro users worldwide in the coming days, starting with the web platform.
