OpenAI launches o3-mini model and ‘deep research’ tool amid AI competition

OpenAI has released two major products: the o3-mini AI model, now freely available to all users, and "deep research," a new research automation tool powered by its upcoming o3 model.

The o3-mini model, launched Jan. 31, is said to deliver 24% faster responses than its predecessor the o1-mini, while maintaining detailed problem-solving capabilities in mathematics, coding, and science.

Users can access it through ChatGPT’s “Reason” feature, with paid versions offering enhanced capabilities for developers.

OpenAI’s new “deep research” tool, launched Sunday, conducts multi-step internet research by analyzing text, images, and PDFs to generate comprehensive reports.

“It accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours,” OpenAI said.

Be that as it may, OpenAI acknowledged that the tool may struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors.

OpenAI has also increased message limits for Plus and Teams users, while Pro subscribers (US$200/month) receive unlimited access.

The releases came as competition intensifies with rivals like China’s DeepSeek and Alibaba. The former, in particular, shook up the AI world last week when it released what it claimed as a superior AI model built with just a fraction of what the likes of OpenAI had spent on their models.
