OpenAI mulls making its own web browser to challenge Google

OpenAI is considering development of a web browser integrated with its ChatGPT technology.

According to a report by The Information, the company has discussed search functionality partnerships with major digital platforms including Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline.

These potential moves follow OpenAI’s earlier entry into search with SearchGPT and come as Google faces antitrust pressure to potentially divest its Chrome browser business.

OpenAI has also reportedly discussed AI feature integration with Samsung devices — a significant Google partner. The AI company already powers Apple’s Apple Intelligence features — which are admittedly still on the nascency — on new devices.

The development occurs amid intensifying competition in AI technologies, with Google having launched its Gemini chatbot in response to ChatGPT’s success. Alphabet’s stock declined 1% in after-hours trading following the news.

While sources indicate the browser launch is not imminent, this strategic direction suggests OpenAI’s ambition to expand beyond AI tools into core internet infrastructure.

The move could reshape competition in search and browsing markets long dominated by established tech giants.
