OpenAI’s Sam Altman wants a Stargate-like AI program in Europe

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed interest in bringing a Stargate-like artificial intelligence initiative to Europe, saying his company would "love" to establish a similar program on the continent.

Stargate, a US-backed AI infrastructure project supported by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, is set to receive up to US$500 billion in investment over five years.

Speaking at a panel at the Technical University of Berlin, Altman emphasized that Europe’s approach to AI regulation would shape its technological future.

“We need help,” he said, noting that OpenAI would comply with any regulations set by European authorities. He urged Europe to embrace AI advancements to remain competitive globally.

As part of its European expansion, OpenAI announced plans to open an office in Munich, Germany.

“Opening our first office in Germany means we can help even more people, businesses, and institutions benefit from AI’s possibilities,” Altman said.

The move follows OpenAI’s recent establishment of offices in Dublin, London, Paris, and Brussels.

Altman is scheduled to attend an AI summit in Paris, where he will join world leaders and government officials to discuss AI policy and innovation.
