Pope Francis reminds World Economic Forum leaders: AI must serve humanity and uphold dignity

Pope Francis addressed global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, urging them to ensure AI serves humanity and the common good.

In his message on Thursday, the pontiff emphasized that AI must uphold human dignity and foster justice, fraternity, and ethical social relations.

As a staunch advocate for scientific and technological progress, the Catholic Church views such advancements as tools to enhance life for all people, the pope stated. Citing Gaudium et Spes and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Francis stressed that AI should prioritize human well-being over technical achievements.

“AI is not an artificial form of human intelligence but a product of it,” he noted.

“When used correctly, it assists the human person in fulfilling their vocation with freedom and responsibility.”

The pope also called for AI-driven progress to inspire a deeper sense of community and a renewed commitment to caring for the Earth, which he described as humanity’s shared home entrusted by God.

Francis cautioned against the risks of adopting a “technocratic paradigm,” where technology is seen as the sole solution to global problems. Within such a framework, he warned, human dignity and fraternity often take a backseat to efficiency, while truth and ethics become secondary to technological and economic dominance.

The pope also raised critical concerns about AI’s impact on public discourse, ethical accountability, and human safety. He stressed that technology must not exacerbate inequalities or conflicts, noting that true progress promotes equity, solidarity, and integral human development.

Highlighting the Catholic principle of subsidiarity, Francis called for collaborative efforts at every societal level, from individuals and families to governments and international organizations, to ensure AI aligns with the common good.

“Significant challenges and opportunities lie ahead,” the pontiff concluded, “but by embracing relational intelligence and shared responsibility, we can harness AI to benefit all.”
