The round, led by Accel with participation from OpenAI’s Startup Fund, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator, comes just six months after a US$20 million Series B extension at a US$500 million valuation.
The platform offers a unique approach to language learning, prioritizing listening and speaking — the way native speakers acquire language — over traditional reading and writing methods. Using AI-powered audio conversations, Speak helps users practice and improve their speaking skills in real time, without human tutors.
Since its launch eight years ago, Speak has focused on teaching English, the world’s most popular language for learners. The platform currently supports learning English from eight originating languages and plans to expand into Spanish and French to broaden its reach. Its app, downloaded over 10 million times, sees users spending 10–20 minutes daily at a cost of US$20 per month or US$99 per year — a fraction of traditional tutoring costs.
“Our mission is to empower the 1.5 billion people learning English by focusing on communication skills,” said Connor Zwick, CEO and co-founder. “Most learners already know vocabulary and grammar but lack the ability to speak fluently. That’s where Speak delivers value.”
Speak’s AI uses a three-step process: immersing users in spoken language, reinforcing phrases through repetitive drills, and anchoring them in real-world contexts. The platform eschews gamification and standardized test preparation, focusing solely on practical language use. However, the team hints at future innovations, including tools to measure fluency and efficacy.
The investment reflects growing enthusiasm for generative AI and OpenAI’s role in shaping practical applications of its technology. “Speak’s world-class AI talent and product vision are creating transformative learning experiences for a rapidly growing global user base,” said Ian Hathaway, partner at OpenAI’s Startup Fund.
With over 200 enterprise customers and plans for expansion, Speak aims to redefine language education with AI, offering a scalable, interactive alternative to traditional methods. Accel’s Ben Quazzo, who joins Speak’s board, praised the company as a standout player in consumer AI, driving growth and innovation in the language-learning market.
