Truly AI-sia: Malaysia launches AI office for policy and innovation

Malaysia has launched a national AI office to spearhead policy development, regulatory oversight, and strategic planning.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the launch as “another historical moment in our digital transformation journey,” highlighting the government’s commitment to leveraging AI for economic growth and technological advancement.

The new AI office will focus on seven key initiatives in its first year, including the creation of an AI code of ethics, a comprehensive regulatory framework, and a five-year AI technology action plan extending through 2030. It will also serve as a centralized hub for research, development, and collaboration across public and private sectors.

Malaysia’s digital sector has seen a surge in investment, attracting billions from global tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. These companies have announced significant cloud, data center, and AI projects in the country over the past year. Strategic partnerships with these firms were highlighted during the launch, further solidifying Malaysia’s position as a key player in Southeast Asia’s digital economy.

The push toward AI innovation comes as Malaysia records robust economic performance in its digital sectors, with approved investments in information and communications reaching 71.1 billion ringgit (US$16.06 billion) in 2024, according to the nation’s investment authority.

With the establishment of the national AI office, Malaysia aims to capitalize on this momentum, laying the foundation for sustainable growth and leadership in AI technology.
