Trump issues AI executive order to eliminate Biden-era policies, focus on innovation

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on artificial intelligence, revoking policies from the Biden administration that the order describes as barriers to American AI innovation.

The directive aims to accelerate AI development while promoting “human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.”

The order mandates a review of all policies, regulations, and directives stemming from former President Joe Biden’s 2023 AI executive order, which Trump repealed earlier this week. Policies that fail to align with the new framework must be suspended.

This marks a departure from Biden’s focus on AI guardrails, which required federal agencies to demonstrate their AI tools did not harm the public or cease their use.

Trump’s executive order calls for an AI action plan within 180 days, to be led by a newly created role—Special Advisor for AI and Crypto—filled by venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks. The White House will oversee revisions to existing directives, including those affecting how federal agencies procure and implement AI tools.

The Biden-era policies, according to Trump’s administration, created unnecessary burdens for private companies, stifling innovation and threatening US leadership in AI. In contrast, Trump’s approach prioritizes reducing regulatory hurdles to foster innovation in both the public and private sectors.

Critics argue that Trump’s order risks undoing protections aimed at addressing AI bias and misuse. Removing safeguards may jeopardize public safety and fairness in the rapidly advancing AI field.

While the executive order establishes a framework, further details on Trump’s broader AI strategy are expected. Businesses and developers should monitor upcoming guidance, as these changes could reshape compliance requirements and opportunities in the AI space.
