Trump taps David Sacks as first White House AI and crypto czar

President-elect Donald Trump announced David Sacks will serve as the administration's “AI & Crypto Czar”—signaling a potential shift in technology policy and regulatory approach.

Sacks, a venture capitalist and prominent podcast host, will guide policy development for AI and cryptocurrency. Trump outlined the role’s objectives as creating a legal framework for crypto and leading the presidential council of advisors on science and technology.

“David will focus on making America the clear global leader in both areas,” Trump stated on Truth Social. “He will safeguard Free Speech online, and steer us away from Big Tech bias and censorship.”

The appointment, which has been in the making since Trump’s victory, reflects a strategic alignment with Silicon Valley supporters and cryptocurrency entrepreneurs.

A member of the “PayPal mafia” who sold his company Yammer to Microsoft for US$1.2 billion, Sacks was notably critical toward Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. He then became a major Trump supporter in the recent presidential election, hosting a high-dollar fundraiser at his San Francisco mansion with tickets ranging from US$50,000 to US$300,000.

Sacks is best known for co-hosting the influential “All-In” podcast, which Trump referenced as the “top podcast in Tech.” His networks include prominent tech figures like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel.

Sacks’ appointment suggests potential deregulation and pro-innovation approaches to AI and cryptocurrency governance, which Trump has stood for throughout his presidential campaign.
