US healthcare platform introduces AI assistant to serve marginalized patients

CareMessage, the largest U.S. patient activation platform for underserved populations, has launched an AI Assistant designed to enhance healthcare access for minority and low-income groups.

The AI tool uses advanced language models, including Google Gemini, to interpret patient responses, addressing critical issues such as food insecurity and transportation challenges more effectively.

CareMessage’s Health Equity Engine already supports over 20 million patients across 400+ safety-net organizations. By integrating AI, the platform takes a significant step toward reducing barriers that disproportionately affect minority and low-income groups, whose no-show rates for medical appointments can reach up to 40%.

Cecilia Corral, CareMessage Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, emphasized the transformative potential of this technology: “We’re driving a paradigm shift in patient engagement, enabling safety-net organizations to interact with patients at scale while maintaining control over critical decision-making logic. Our AI Assistant is built with safeguards to protect patient safety and address the unique challenges of underserved populations.”

Developed through collaboration with key healthcare partners, the AI Assistant underwent rigorous validation to ensure ethical use, address biases, and meet the needs of safety-net organizations. Clinics retain full control over its implementation and can opt out during the rollout.

The results are already promising. At Maple City Health Care Center, the AI Assistant has helped reduce no-show rates by nearly 28% this year, freeing up appointment slots for rescheduling and improving care continuity.

By aligning cutting-edge AI with a mission to resolve health inequities, CareMessage is setting a benchmark for how technology can drive meaningful change in underserved communities.
