X tests free (but limited) version of Grok AI chatbot

Social network X is piloting free access to its AI chatbot Grok, previously available only to premium subscribers.

The test launch appears limited to specific regions, with TechCrunch confirming availability in New Zealand. Genius Group’s Asia-based writers were not able to gain free access to Grok as of this article’s publication.

According to an app researcher who goes by the handle Swak on X, the free version comes with usage limits: 10 queries per two hours for the Grok-2 model and 20 queries for Grok-2 mini. Users can analyze up to three images daily. To access the service, accounts must be at least seven days old with a linked phone number.

The move follows xAI’s August release of Grok-2, which features image generation powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model. The company recently added image comprehension capabilities to compete with established AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

This strategic shift for Grok could prove significant for expanding its user base. Opening up the chatbot to new users could also potentially create a new data pipeline to improve its AI model amid a race with competing models.

The timing is noteworthy as xAI reportedly seeks billions in funding at a US$40 billion valuation. The move may also pressure other AI chatbot providers to reconsider their pricing strategies in an increasingly competitive market.
