xAI launches Beta version of standalone Grok app for iOS

Elon Musk's xAI has begun testing a dedicated iOS app for its Grok chatbot, expanding beyond its previous X-platform exclusivity.

The beta version is currently available in Australia and select other countries.

The new app combines real-time web and X data access with AI features including text rewriting, summarization, Q&A capabilities, and image generation from text prompts.

xAI is simultaneously developing Grok.com to provide web-based access to the chatbot, though the site currently displays only a “coming soon” message for logged-in xAI users.

Earlier this month, xAI broadened Grok’s availability beyond X’s paid subscribers, following November tests of a free version.

The company claims its image generation model specializes in photorealistic rendering and operates with fewer restrictions than competitors, allowing users to create images using public figures and copyrighted material.

This expansion could signal increased competition in the consumer AI app market, particularly in the relatively unrestricted approach to image generation capabilities.
