You can now visit and be inspired by the AI-generated St. Peter’s Basilica

The Vatican and Microsoft have collaborated to create a digital replica of the historic St. Peter’s Basilica.

By building a virtual model of one of the world’s most famous religious sites, this project highlights an innovative use of AI to preserve history, manage visitor flow, and improve conservation—all while inviting global audiences to “visit” remotely.

Microsoft’s use of drones and AI tools to capture over 400,000 high-resolution images has created an immersive virtual replica of the site ahead of the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee, when crowd numbers are expected to soar.

Similar approaches, of course, could be applied to other historical sites, cultural monuments, or even cities looking to boost tourism.

The technology is evidently there to address any rising demand for remote experiences, and immersive tech can bring in new revenue streams, whether it’s through virtual tickets, education partnerships, or even digital memberships.

Microsoft’s project also shows how to cater to modern expectations around accessibility and sustainability. They’ve not only preserved this world heritage site for future generations but also developed a digital solution for the expected crowd surge in 2025.

In a world where tech and purpose don’t always go hand in hand, this project sets a standard for how they can—and should—align. For entrepreneurs interested in digital preservation, visitor management, or immersive tech, it’s a playbook worth studying.
