Zuckerberg says Meta wants to invest $60 billion in AI for 2025

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to invest US$60 billion to US$65 billion in artificial intelligence this year, as the tech giant aims to lead the next wave of AI innovation.

“This will be a defining year for AI,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post, highlighting Meta’s ambition to make Meta AI the top digital assistant used by over a billion people. He also emphasized the company’s focus on Llama 4, its next-generation AI model, which he says will set new standards in the field.

Meta’s plans include building a massive new datacenter to support its AI initiatives and creating an AI engineer designed to contribute to coding for its research and development. “This is a massive effort,” Zuckerberg said, “and over the coming years, it will drive our core products and business, unlock historic innovation, and extend American technology leadership.”

The announcement follows US President Donald Trump’s recent unveiling of Stargate, a US$500 billion AI infrastructure venture led by SoftBank and OpenAI. However, the project has drawn skepticism, with tech tycoon Elon Musk questioning the financial backing of its main investors.

Meanwhile, Microsoft President Brad Smith revealed the company is on track to spend approximately US$80 billion this fiscal year on AI infrastructure, model training, and cloud-based applications. “The United States is poised to stand at the forefront of this new technology wave, especially if it doubles down on its strengths and effectively partners internationally,” Smith said.

Zuckerberg’s vision for 2025 positions Meta as a key player in the AI landscape. The company’s significant investment in infrastructure and advanced AI models underscores its commitment to shaping the future of technology and securing a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving industry.
